GTA 6 Storage: How Much Space You Need and Whether to Buy an SSD

The short answer

Clear 200 GB of free space before November 12. Most people do not need to buy anything. They need to delete two or three games they stopped playing.

Rockstar has not announced the install size. Anyone quoting an exact number is guessing.

Do you actually need a new SSD?

Work through this in order.

1. Check your free space right now. Console settings, storage.
2. 200 GB or more free? You are done. Buy nothing.
3. Less than 200 GB free? Look at what is installed. Most people find one or two finished games worth 150 GB between them.
4. Still short after deleting? Now a drive is worth it.

Buying storage you did not need is the most common launch-week mistake. Deleting is free and takes four minutes.

The number on the box is not the number you get. System software takes a permanent cut.

Series S owners at 512 GB: you are the tight case. A 200 GB install takes more than half your usable space. Plan early.

How big is GTA 6?

Not announced. Rockstar has published no install size on any storefront.

For planning, 150 to 250 GB is the sensible window. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped around 150 GB in 2018 and GTA 6 is a larger world at higher fidelity, so the low end would be a surprise. A viral 677 GB figure is not credible.

Leave headroom on top of whatever you reserve. Launches at this scale usually ship a day one patch, and large updates need temporary working space while they install.

What does not work

You cannot play from a USB drive. This catches people every year.

• PS5: PS5 games run from the internal SSD or an installed M.2 drive only. A USB drive can archive a PS5 game, but you have to copy it back before you can play it.
• Xbox Series X|S: optimized games run from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card only. A USB drive can hold the game, but not run it.

A cheap USB drive is still useful. Move your other games onto it instead of deleting them, and free up internal space that way.

If you are buying: PS5

Sony publishes exact specifications for the M.2 slot. Some are hard requirements and some are recommendations, and the difference matters when you are choosing a drive.

• Interface: M.2 NVMe, PCIe Gen 4 x4, Socket 3 Key M. M.2 SATA drives are not supported. Gen 5 drives physically fit but give no advantage, since the slot runs at Gen 4.
• Read speed: Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s sequential or faster. Note the wording: recommended, not required. A slower drive may still be accepted, but Sony does not guarantee it performs like the internal drive.
• Form factor: 2280 is the common size and the one to buy. 2230, 2242, 2260 and 22110 are also accepted.
• Heatsink: required. Buy a drive with one attached rather than sourcing one separately.
• Size limit with heatsink: 110 mm long, 25 mm wide, 11.25 mm tall.
• No Host Memory Buffer. The PS5 does not support HMB. Some budget DRAM-less drives rely on it and will run slower than their box speed suggests. Look for a drive with its own DRAM cache.
• One heatsink only. If the drive already has a built-in cooling structure, do not add another. Sony advises against it, and it can make cooling worse.
• Capacity: 250 GB minimum, 8 TB maximum on current system software. Update your console before installing.

Which size. 1 TB is enough if you play one game at a time. 2 TB is the sensible buy if you keep several large games installed, and the price gap between 1 TB and 2 TB is usually small enough that 2 TB is the better value per gigabyte.

Officially licensed PS5 drives ship with the correct heatsink already fitted and remove the guesswork. Unlicensed drives that meet the specs above work identically.

Does this void your warranty? No, provided the drive meets the specs above and you follow Sony’s installation instructions. Damage caused by installing a non-compliant drive or installing it incorrectly is not covered.

If you are buying: Xbox Series X|S

Xbox is simpler and more restrictive. Expansion uses a proprietary card that slots into the back of the console, and it performs identically to the internal drive. There is no M.2 slot and no cheaper generic route.

For GTA 6 alone, 1 TB is more than enough. Series S owners at 512 GB benefit most.

Do this now

1. Check your free space. Write the number down.
2. Delete or archive anything you have not opened in three months.
3. If you are still under 200 GB free, buy before November, not during launch week.
4. Wait for the official store listing if you can. Once Rockstar publishes the real size, you will know exactly what you need.
